Choi Seung Hui,

Fulfilling the Sound Art of Paradox, Flossy but not Flossy

Yang Ok-Gyeong

edition and translation: Jeonju Cultural Foundation

Opening

Someone might say Choi Seung-Hui’s sound is a little plat. Others might say that is like a forest which have many tree to blow a lot. However professional singers do not deny that her sound is elegant and appealing.

Actually, elegance is aesthetics consisting of controlled sound while appeal is aesthetics which is made by singer’s various interpretation of Pansori. There must be a reason conflicting aesthetics coexists in her sound. What makes her construct the system of unique sound between hard and soft?

1. A little girl, born in rich farm, is captured by sound.

Her hometown is Ik-san. Her parents thought agriculture and diligence as vocation and the best value each. Under the parents, when she was a student of Buk-il elementary school in Ik-san, Jeon-buk. She did her best on everything. She was absorbed in learning everything from Chang Ga to Woong Byeon.

When her relatives gathered in a place, they always used to ask her for singing because of her cute voice like a nightingale. Her aunt liked her talent and went on a picnic with her hand grabbed in a meeting(Gyemoim) in Gun-san. Her aunt wanted many people to listen to her voice. That was a first opportunity for Choi Seung Hui to live with sound.

When they arrived, she came to see handrail of ‘Gun-san Organization of Voice(past name of Gun-san Claasical Music Institute)’ where drum‘s sound came. At that time, she saw a pretty girl sing a song with neat clothing. The girl beat drums and danced Mugo saying ‘Duridudung duridungdung’. She remembered that the girl's image had looked like a angel descending from heaven.

Looking at the girl, her aunt dragged her and was hurry in going to home. On her way going home, She begged for her aunt to persuade her parents to let her learn sound. Her mother came to know her hope was not simple and helped her learning. Under the care of her mother, she could stay her aunt’s home and her mother earned money for sound behind her father’s back. Her way for sound was started who would be famous for Jeongjeongnyeolje Chunhyangga some day.

2. It does a young man good to suffer some privations in the world or inevitably!

Her first teacher is master singer, Hong Jeong Taek. When he had worked as a teacher of sound in Gun-san Clasical Music Institute, she entered upon sound. it was a kind of relation. However, learning in Gun-san was not long because she moved out Jeon-ju.

She also visited Jeon-ju Classical Music Institute again and her teacher was Kim Dong Joon who was honored as a famous drummer. He taught her Simcheongga but he went to Seoul before long. After that, new teacher of Classical Music Institute was master singer of Hong Jeong Taek that gave her learning sound first. If she had learned sound under him, she had been comfortable. However, her life did not permit that.

As soon as she talked about willing of learning sound to her father, he got angry and did not changed his mind several years later. She felt sorry for her mother who bought necessaries and prepared fee behind her father’s back.

At that time, there were lots of new organizations of Korean traditional opera for popularity for Korean traditional opera(Chang-geuk). She could not forget announcement of recruit of a new organization and it was 'Woori Organization of Korean Classical Music.' While she was preparing to submit an application, she met new chance. Students of percussion department of Jeon-ju Classical Music Institute felt miserable about her talent, gathered money, and supposed that they made her learn sound in Seoul. Futhermore, teacher was Kim Yeo Ran, who was a very famous woman master singer. It was about 1956.

3. She could be a singer because Kim Yeo Ran was too harsh, if anything!

Kim Yeo Ran, her teacher was good at various sound, for example, Kyeong-gi folk song, aria as well as Pansori. It was said that she did also sing the folk song of Kyeongseo-do well by her.

In those days, Kim Yeo Ran lived in home-cum-educational institute at Jong-no. She was so upright that normal people could not stand 3 days. Both housekeeper and students did not stay long.

However, she could not leave her because to leave her meaned to stop sound with complicated reasons. Naturally considerable part of her household became her share while teaching students. She should also study sound to lead a hectic life.

Kim Yeo Ran was considered a great singer with Kim So Hui. Her strength of ‘Jeongjeongnyeolje Chunhyangga’ was more famous than any other body’s Chunhyangga. For these influences, there were constant requests for performance. Yeo Ran did not appear not only on the TV, but also on stage of theater. One time, PD listened to her sound and proposed appearance on TV while he came to meet Yeo Ran. However, the refusal of the teacher was harsh.

One day, she went out teacher’s home by herself, stayed with relatives in penury, and drifted apart sound with marriage.

Her face was deep in shadow with thinking of this time. At that time, young lady might have some resentment in her heart. Even though everyone had heartrending story, her gloomy face was enough to describe how much sorrow she had. Her retrospect overpassed the period between early twenties to early forties.

4. Elaborate sound does not betray!

It was a great chance to win 1st place of master singer part of Pansori in Nam Won Chunhyang Festival and Jeonju Daesaseumnori and her life become warmer and warmer. She was about 48 which was over forty years old, waiting Jicheonmyeong(the age of fifty).

If someone can ask why is important to reive an award, someone may talk high and mighty. She found favor with a great drummer Il San(Kim Myeong Han’s pen name), but could not appear on the stage. There also was a time she had to do a business to live. After these years, she was 40. It was a first warm response to her life with sincerity and positiveness to win 1st place with poor clothing. It was also sound’s respond to her elaboration or brave to bet her life on sound. Paradoxically, late fortune made her life over 40 full of sound.

She gained formal title through Chunhyang Festival and Jeon-ju Daesaseumnori, the best authoritative Pansori Festival, met the public on her independent stage in Seoul and Japan. She could also become a sound teacher in college of Traditional Music of several universities as well as making record. There were good fortune of awards.

5. Her sound to empty a mind, only people lived though tortuous life can hear

She was the best-known singer that sang Jeongjeongnyeolje Chunhyangga. It was a natural result because she herself was deeply in it.

She considers its grace with noble sound neither short nor overflowing. Whatever it is to overflow becomes a problem rather than to lack. Current sound are sometimes said to be devoted to excessive expressiveness.

Aesthetic of Pansofi, she said, is neither that complicated nor enormous. If listeners as well as singers are naturally absorbed in sound, she thinks that sound as the best.

While her words are heard easily at first hearing, its impression is heavy and long like pain. It is because she live strongly and positively in spite of her harsh and heavy life.

If someone says Choi Seung-Hui’s sound is a little plat, he does not watch moderation behind emptiness. If others say that is like a forest which have many tree to blow a lot, they do not listen to her rigour with which began cutting a fine live branch to produce useful lumber.

She was indulgent with our sound and went through many setbacks to get it after she was 10 years old. However, she does not have to stand alone. It is because Mo Bo Gyeong, her daughter, is keeping on sing Jeongjeongnyeolje Chunhyangga to succeed her. Also Kim Ha Eun, Mo Bo Gyeong’s daughter, is accompanying her.

Closing

She suffered from several hardship when she was young. Since then, she got the fortune of sound and called it a heavenly blessing. Even though she operated more than 10 times, she would become Chun-hyang, Sim-cheong, and Heung-bo every time people ask for her song. I plead her for going strong and leading us full of delight because of her sound.
